HMC FAIR Friday
Speaker: Dr. Angelo Strollo
Title: The eFAIRs project
The eFAIRs project is funded by the Helmholtz Association to improve the FAIRness of Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) data. OBS data are used to study earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other geophysical phenomena. OBS data can be difficult to share because the strict and technical domain specific standardisation may complicate the sharing of more exotic data within the domain itself as well as hinder interoperability throughout the earth science community. eFAIRs aims to facilitate the integration of specialized datasets from the seabed and improve interoperability and reusability.
To achieve this goal, new data sets have been archived at the seismological data archive at GFZ that define a new workflow. This was then translated into guidelines for the community. Domain specific software have been modified to allow OBS data inclusion with specific additional metadata. Among these metadata also persistent identifiers of the instruments in use have been included for the first time from the AWI sensor information system.
In addition to the achievements of the eFAIRs project, the talk will also cover next steps and ideas of the project that go beyond the seismological community and are also relevant to other research communities.
To stimulate and support interdisciplinary exchange, the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration HMC in close cooperation with the HIDA is organising the HMC FAIR Friday lecture series. It is aimed at experienced actors in research data management as well as scientists from all research fields of the Helmholtz Association and beyond.
HMC FAIR Friday will feature talks by high-ranking national and international speakers who will bring all participants (even) closer to the world of FAIR data, deepen individual aspects and stimulate discussions.
